Myth Busters — Penis Size Myths Debunked

Separating science from locker-room lore — every myth tested against clinical evidence

"Size doesn't matter at all"

Verdict: IT'S COMPLICATED

While emotional connection and sexual skill matter most, research shows some size preference exists. Women preferred slightly above-average for one-time partners (6.4" length, 5.0" girth) vs long-term (6.3", 4.8"). But 85% of women are satisfied with their partner's actual size, and girth matters more than length.

"Race determines penis size"

Verdict: BUSTED

While some small average differences exist between geographic populations, the within-group variation (>7cm range) is 15-30x greater than between-group differences. Most "racial size" data comes from unreliable self-reported surveys. Clinician-measured studies show minimal differences when controlling for measurement methods.

"You can make your penis bigger with pills"

Verdict: BUSTED

No oral supplement has been scientifically verified to permanently increase penis size. The male enhancement supplement industry is rife with fraud — the FTC and FDA have taken action against dozens of companies for false claims. Some supplements (L-arginine, ginseng) may improve erection quality, but none increase dimensions.

"Jelqing is an ancient exercise that works"

Verdict: BUSTED

Despite claims of ancient Arabic origins, there are ZERO peer-reviewed clinical studies demonstrating jelqing increases penis size. The "evidence" comes entirely from anonymous internet forum posts with severe survivorship bias. Urologists warn it can cause Peyronie's disease, vascular damage, and decreased erection quality.

"Once you stop growing in puberty, nothing can change your size"

Verdict: IT'S COMPLICATED

Natural growth ends after puberty (Tanner Stage V). However, clinical evidence shows traction devices can produce 1-3cm of length gain through mechanical tissue expansion (cytokinesis). Surgical options also exist. Weight loss can reveal buried shaft. But no pill, cream, or exercise has been proven to work.

"Masturbation shrinks your penis"

Verdict: BUSTED

There is absolutely no scientific evidence that masturbation affects penis size in any direction. This myth likely stems from religious or moralistic traditions discouraging masturbation. Regular erections may actually be beneficial for penile tissue health.

Sources: No supporting evidence in medical literature

"A bigger penis means better sex"

Verdict: BUSTED

Meta-analyses show sexual satisfaction depends far more on communication, emotional connection, attentiveness, and technique than on penis size. The majority of female orgasms are clitoral, not vaginal. Studies show most women prioritize partner confidence and skill over measurements.

"Penile pumps can permanently increase size"

Verdict: IT'S COMPLICATED

Vacuum pumps produce TEMPORARY engorgement (increased size during and shortly after use). There is no peer-reviewed evidence that regular pump use leads to permanent size increases. They are medically validated for treating erectile dysfunction and post-surgical rehabilitation.

Sources: No peer-reviewed evidence for permanent gains

"Shockwave therapy grows your penis"

Verdict: BUSTED

Low-intensity shockwave therapy (Li-ESWT) has good evidence for improving ERECTION QUALITY (12 randomized controlled trials support this), but ZERO studies have shown it increases penile dimensions. Companies marketing it for "size gains" are being misleading.

"Average is actually pretty big — porn has warped our perspective"

Verdict: CONFIRMED

The average erect penis is 5.1-5.5 inches (13-14 cm). Porn performers are selected for being significantly above average (typically 7-9 inches), and camera angles/positions further exaggerate size. Studies show porn consumption increases size anxiety and dissatisfaction in men.

"Penile dysmorphia isn't a real condition"

Verdict: BUSTED

Penile Dysmorphic Disorder (PDD) is a recognized subtype of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). Men with PDD have penises within normal range but experience severe distress. Prevalence of BDD is ~1.9%. Treatment is CBT and SSRIs, NOT surgery (which often worsens distress).

"Stretching exercises can add inches"

Verdict: IT'S COMPLICATED

Manual stretching has no clinical evidence. BUT medical-grade traction devices (which apply calibrated, sustained stretch) have clinical support for 1-3cm gains over months. The difference is controlled force over thousands of hours vs. 20 minutes of hand pulling.
